Due to the firedrill and loss of time in class, each member of each group should post to this blog about what they learned in their chapter. If you we responsible for facts - post about that...
Please make sure to mention what chapter you worked from, what you learned and how it applies to the themes of slavery that you will need for your project.
Make sure to read each other's posts and make notes from people's information.

Chapter 27: History's Paradox:
Christopher Columbus went to America and took indians as slaves without knowing if it was right or wrong. He thought since everyone else had slaves, he should too. This has to do with the slavery since this tells us that some people didn't really know if the slavery was right or wrong.
I was doing chapter30 and I was encharged of finding 5 facts. One fact was "Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin." 2-"Yeomans didn't own slaves because they were too poor."
3-"During the time of George Washington, the southern white people didn't like the idea of slavery." 4-"Slaves fought against the white people for their freedomm." 5-"Some people said that God made some people to be a slave and some people said that the white people were smarter than the balck people so they made a law that it's a crime to teach black people to read or write."
BLOG POST ONN WHAT I READ TODAY
Today, I read chapter 28 in my group. I read about Robert Carter and found out that he started out as a very rich person. He was one of the richest people in Virginia and owned 500 slaves. He then got bored of his special privilages to find out what real life was like. He then got baptized from Anglican to baptist, and then got 136 people to sign a petition that stated that you can worship your own religion and not pay taxes to churches and go to your place of worship whenever you wanted.

I was doing the 5 facts with christina Park. I found out that African Children get tron from their root and transplanted into America.
Those of you talking about paradox... what is it? talk about how our country was a paradox... 731, we talked about this in class today. Would love to hear about what you got out of the conversation.
I did Chapter 31 with Michael, Yusef, Anna, and Ashley. I was responsible for writing on the chart paper and finding important people. One important person was Robert E. Lee. He was the South's most famous general. Lee believed in morality. The European countries were also important. They had abolished slavery, and those european countries began critisizing( don't know how to spell) the U.S for allowing slavery.
I did chapter 31 with Joanna, Anna, Yusef and Michael. Anna and I were responsible for the 5 facts. I learned that during the 1820-30's the slaves rebelled and killed some white men. By 1840 there were said to be about 2000 abolitionist societies in the North. Some states abolished slavery and the european states began criticizing the United States for allowing slavery in their slavery. those were the facts that we have found.
I was doing important People and I found 3 important people.
Christopher Columbus:
- He came to America and took Indians as slaves without knowing if it was right or wrong.
- James Madison was president of the African Colonization Society.
- Henry Clay was another member of the African Colonization Society.
From the chapter I learned that Jefferson tried to pass a constitution for Virginia that would gradually free the slaves. I never knew that he had tried to do anything specific to free the slaves. I also learned that it was strange for rich people in the south to not own slaves.I was surprised to hear that A rich man from the south would decide to free all of his slaves and become a baptist. I think that he also made a large impact in the south when he helped with the petition to let everyone have the choice of religion. When I was reading one of the facts on the side I learned that slave owners would purposefully separate family. It made me so mad to hear about that.

I really don't remember the chapter, i think it was chapter 31, my group was Christina P, Kassie, Yohan and Craig. I was in charge of finding the important people.I found out information about Lemuel Haynes, he was an African-American soldier in the continental army. He fought as a minuteman in the battle of lexington and he was a freed slave. I also found info about Elizabeth Freeman who was a slave in massachusettes when the revolutionary war ended, a lawyer helped her win her freedom in court and the daughter of the lawyer drew a portrait of her. The other was Richard Allen, he was a bricklayer, a preacher and a slave. His master alloud him to work extra hours and buy his freedom. I learned some facts with my goup such as: once the africans were in america they became Africans-Americans and their owners had to choose their names.
My group- hanlim, stacy, maria joseph, and me (gabby) read chapter 30. "The King and His People".
(hanlim did the facts)
Vocabulary-
Coffle- a walking jail of slaves chained together.
Lynch-to kill w/out a fair trial.
Important People- George Washington, and Eli Whitney.
My group, Alexis, Dimitri, Taylor, Olivia, and Tessa all worked on chapter 28. My job was to do the vocabulary, along with Alexis.

I was in the Chapter 28 Group.
I did important people:
Robert Carter III was a very rich and selfish man. He became a baptist. His new religion told him that slavery was wrong so he set all his slaves free. He was one of the largest slave owners owning approximately 500. He did things that his neighbors and peers thought was crazy, but he didn't care.
Mary Stith was the daughter of the president of the College of William & Mary. When she died in 1813 she left her entire estate to her slaves.
Henry Laurens hated slavery but owned and sold slaves. He was the richest merchant in Charleston, which means a lot. During the Revolution he was captured by the British and sent to prison in the Tower of London. He was released in trade for General Cornwallis. When he left his health was very bad. If it hadn't had been so bad he would have been part of the Constitutional Convention. If he was he could have changed America so much.
