I don't think it's slavery because the workers are being paid and have a choice to do it or not.

I disagree with Lawrence. I definately think that it's slavery because they don't have much of a choice. If they live in a desolate area there isn't much to do about a job. If tomato picking is the only job available you have to work it to get money even though it might be minimum wage or lower. Also the situations that these people are in is unknown. They could be treated really badly and could be blackmailed into doing it even. So I think there is still slavery in America and everywehre you go.

As Lawrence said, it is not slavery, because the people have a choice whether to do it or not. It may be sad that Burger King doesn't want to pay their workers a measly extra penny, but the tomato pickers are not being forced to do anything; they went their on their own will. It may not exactly be the best job, but the article doesn't really aim the job to people of any race, like slavery in the 19th century did. It may be sad that some people have to pick tomatos for a living, but this is definitely not slavery.

Like Lawrence said, I dont think it was a slavery since the workers got paid and also they had a choice to work for the tomato picking or not. It's their choice to leave or stay. If they don't think it's fair, they could just quit.

I agree with Lawrence because i think it's not slavey if their getting paid, I alson agree with tessa because they dont have a choise. I think that slavery was a demand that the whites made the colored people do but if it's a job and you get paid, you could eather accept it of decline it. If the workers are imigrants i think they will take the job because they need the money but since no one is making them it's not called slavery =)

I agree with Lawrence and Tessa if that is who lightbulb82@earthlink.net is. This is not considered slavery because they have a choice. Back then slaves did not have a choice to work they had to work. They also get paid and slaves did not get paid. But it is also considered slavery because if they need the money and they are desperate then it is considered as slavery.

I think it is not slavery because they didn't get payed. They would work like crazy but, get nothing. Here they are a least getting payed even thow it is very little. So I don't think it is slavery.

It's true that there is no slavery in america because when there was slavery, you were forced to work, but in america now you have a choice to work or not to work. so I also agree with Lawrence.

I don't think it's Slavery if they have a choice. Slaves don't get a choice like if slaves have children their children are also born slaves without a choice. These people have a choice and aren't being forced to do something they don't want to do.

I think that even if the workers are paid they do not have a choice because it is the only work they can get. Even though they are not owned it is like slavery because they can not leave or get another job. The workers have not gotten a raise in 20 years and Burger King can afford to give them the extra money.

I think that this isnt slavery because in the post it doesn't have anywhere in there saying that they are forced to work as a tomato picker or what amount they are paid. There is the possibilities that Tessa listed but I really think that the chances of that being the case doesn't seem very high.

What I think about slavery and if it still exist is that slavery does not exist. The only thing is that no one is forgeting the past. Like black forgeting they were own and us being harsh. All that negative energy still flows around everyone and can burst out. One thing I feel about this is that some time I see blacks make fun of whites, but it is still the same with the whites making fun of the black. So it is not slavery it is racism that still and probably will always exist.

I think this is not slavery, like Lawrence said because the tomato pickers are considered working and actually getting paid for their work. Although I do find it quite harsh for them to get such a low income for all their hardship and they have a choice.

i agree with tessa because we don't know anything aobut the people and how there being treated or how much there working for. I also think that slavery still excists but maybe not the way it was in the 18 hundreds.

I think its not slavery if they have a choice or get paid because slaves never had that luxury because they were just hauled over here and forced to work without pay as you should know by now. I definitely think that slaver still exists because there are a lot of third world countries and countries that are still trying to get past that dark phase in history.

hmmm..... Well, Slavery is
1. Being forsed to do something you don't want to do

2. being judged by where your from or your color

3. not getting anything decent in return

These men have a choice if they want to do this. Imigrants don't have good jobs and they are paid to do this. They are not forsed to do it, They are getting money in rturn and they are not working because of their color or place. They are working because they are jobless and need a job.
