Modern Slavery

We had a very interesting discussion today about modern incarnations of slavery. You all had wonderful things to say and some of you changed your mind.

Then channel one discussed Nelson Mandela and how he fought and fights for human rights. What do you think?

Post ideas here if you didn't get to share in class.

I read the article about the slavery in china. Today, I was thinking about why the companies are only kidnapping kids. I think it's because the kids are beatable unlike strong adults, who thinks hard to find the way out.

Today in class, I learned many interesting things, including that slavery exists everywhere in thw world! This was really shocking to me, because I only thought that slavery would exist in some far-off countries or hard to find places. The article that I read was called "Modern Day Slavery." One of the main reasons that slavery has become an organized crime like selling drugs, is that unlike drugs, humans can be sold over and over again until they age, get sick, or die. Even though not too much can be done too stop modern day slavery, I hope that it ends soon, because nobody wants another war over slavery!

Today in class I the article about china where kids were being captured to work as laboroers. I read about how they would line up the kids and choose who would work by their body type and things like that. I was curious about what they did with the children who they decided not to use. I tried to find more information about that aspect of the child labor but i couldn't find much. Like Jonathan I hope that salvery ends soon, but i think that there will always be slavery as long as there is work to be done.

When watching the broadccast about Nelson Mandela I thought it wasn't fair the way he was put on some kind of watch list and it was hard for him to travel to America because of it. I think he did something very important, and he obviously understood that even though racist people ruled the South African government, he coul dmake a difference. And when he became president of South Africa I think he made a very big difference in the government and political views.

I read the most recent article and I was very surprised that slavery was still very strong even today. I learned, in china they have children mostly 13 and 15 were tricked or kidnapped to work in factory’s and there only getting paid about 42cent a hour, the local minimum wage is 64cent an hour.
After reading the article I changed my mind I thought that slavery was only in very few countries but I now I see that it is world wide.

When I read todays article I learned that in "Modern Day Slavery" they deceive small children who are to afraid of death to run away, and then treat them like worthless cargo. I used to believe that slavery existed in the world but not on this scale. I was really surprised because I realize how many victims there are in which most of them are poor. I learned that some were out of religious expansion (forcing people to join you religion) and some were just poor people who wouldn't be missed by the general public. I found out that countries like Germany, The Czech republic and other wealthier country violate these people. There were women and children who were promised with a better future, a well paying job, great living conditions, warm food, and were rewarded with garbage. Not only are there slave traders now there are people who don't feel like standing up and doing their best to save these people, These people need to not only do stuff thats not important like improving bed conditions for slaves, but they should save these slaves. Give them their family back, give them their lives back. We need to find a way to end these victims sorrows.

I read the article called Modern Slaves. I learned that millions of men, woman, and children twice the size of Rhode Island were being held against their will, as slaves.
- there are 200, 000 to 300,000 children who are locked in rooms. Their forced to weave on looms or they don't get food.
- Children usually work 10 - 14 hours.
I also learned that Slavery still
exists today, all over the world even in the U.S. I thought it would only exist in poor countries where there is hard work people don't want to do. SO they have slaves. But I didn't know America also had slaves.

i had read the article modern slavery and i never knew that there was such thing as sex slavery. That had really surprised me. I never doubted that there was still slavery but then again i also thought that SLAVERY WOULD END!! I also thought that it was mean how people lied to others and told them that they had a great future but when they finally got there what the person had said wasn't the truth i thought that was very mean!!

I learned a lot more just from reading what you guys posted. I learned a little about their living from michelle. I didn't know that they were locked in rooms. I never really thought about where they slept or anything. I guess it must have been terrible. Also, I don't know who pcjem is but I thought it was interesting what they said about how people wouldn't really notice they were gone. I agree completely. They definetly targeted poor people that wouldn't be missed or anything. I also agree that we have to find a way to stop all forms of slavery. But I still don't understand why people would force others to convert to their religion. Can someone explain that to me? Also I was wondering if the citizens of the countries inwhich this is heppening are aware, because I would assume that eventually they would realize that the promise of a better life was a lie. I was talking to my sister the other day and she watched a movie in shcool about a girl who was helping to smuggle drugs into countries. It sounded really gross because she'd swallow the drugs in a bag and then she'd fly into the country. Her friend had swallowed one bag and it broke inside of her and the men who were paying the girls to do these things cut her open to salvage the drugs. I think that's also another kind of slavery, because they were doing it becuase they needed money so desperately and theses people would kill the girls just to save the drugs.

I'm not very good with names and don't remember who Nelson Mandela is. I read the article in the New York times about China. I don't understand how people didn't realize it. The other day I was watching the news and there was a broadcast about a company in Thailand (I'm not very sure about that though) that sells shrimp and their entire staff was slaves but the government released a statement when the news leaked out about how they are trying to fix it. They didn't shut down the company or arrest anybody.

Today in class I the article about china where kids 13 to 15 were either kiddnaped or tricked in to working for enployment agenices and most of the time they were forced to wrok up to 300 hours. i dont think they should be forceing teens or children to do such hard work it's un fair!
(my opinion)- and i think the people who took them would want to work 300 hhours srtaight. children and teens should be in school were there minds could grow.

i had read the most recent article, which was on May 1st. I learned that the kids were getting kidnapped/tricked and were sent to factories where they had to work 300 hours a mouth. They only got paid 42 cents and the minimum wage was 64 cents. I thought that slavery didn't really exist now, but it still does.

Olivia, just so you know for future refrenece nelson mandela was the man they had the broadcast on on channel 1 news. He had been the president of South Africa, and he had been locked away in jail for a really long time. Also he was the one who was part of a group that the white governmetn in South Africa called a terrorist group.

In class I read the article "Modern-Day Slavery", I thought it was really interesting because it said that today people owned different kinds of races now, from Blacks, Asians, Whites, Hispanics, Browns, and all others. I thought it was kind of strange in a way because when I related to slavery back then, it was only African-Americans but, now its like all races. Another thing that I have to say is that, owning slaves in modern times, is like selling drugs or smuggling illegal packages, but instead with humans doing back-breaking labor and will be "re-usable" until they die.

In class, I read the article "Modern-Day Slavery" and I thought that it was very interesting. I was suprised to find that slavery still exists and that it is now more tricky than before. People now trick and decieve to try to get people to work for them. Some kids even get kidnapped to a far away place so they have to work because they can't escape. I hope that the world can do something to stop slavery soon.
