I read the article about the case against the Island Trees in New York about the school board wanting to remove a list of books they found anti-american, anti-christian, etc. They were set upon the US Supreme Court about a case having to do with the right of free-speech. They lost the case 5-4 and weren't allowed to remove the books. I think that this is the right decision because as students, we have the right to read anything we wanted to. Also, like the Judge William Brennan said, that the access to these ideas would prepare us for these problems later on, I agree with this because, we should be able to communicate ideas freely and if we know about it now, it could be better than finding out later on.

I read the Fraser Case. I found it interesting that even though the student did not use any actual language but rather metaphors, Chief Justin Warren Burger still would not quote him. I am glad that the student, Fraser, did not get suspended because of the speech that he made. I believe that the decision made was fair because the student did not actually use any language. However, Fraser should have probably picked his words more carefully, because describing his friend as "a man who is firm" is definitely treading on shallow water. This is just one of the many interesting examples of first amendment rights and how they can possibly be misused or misjudged.

I read the Fraser case and I'm also glad that the person didnt get suspended.(I agree with Jonathan.)I think that the decision was fair because the speech didnt include any sexual language. If I had to choose whether the boy should get suspended, I would choose no, because the words werent inappropiate but the terms used may have been. Some terms may have been misunderstood. Besides, this is a free speech and in the admentment, it had said free speech is allowed. I wonder why the government usually dont allow students like us to protest or say something that we dont like at all.

I have read the article The west Hazelwood Decision and I really don't understand why the School District would want to band the pregnancy part to the article because if the School District really did care about the kids they would want the kids to be informed that if they are not careful they could end up pregnant. The article said it was a high school, and kids in high school are not to young to be getting lecture about being safe and about getting pregnant and kids our age are even getting lectures about that now. So I really disagree with the School District about banding the pregnancy article.

I had read the fraser case and I thought itwas really interesting because of the way the kids used metaphor. I really dont think the kid should be suspended because he didn't really do anything that bad. Luckily he wasn't suspended becasue of his intelligent speech. I thought his speach was pretty strong and mature.

I read the fraser case and I think it was the right thing for the student to get not suspended since he/she didn't say any actual sexual terms. I think the fact that this student had to go to the court was unfair since the first amendment states that everyone should have freedom of speech.
