Long Weekend Homework

First a few reminders:
  1. Your map projects are due on Monday, October 15. If you want to hand them in early, that would be appreciated and rewarded. I'd also like to start scheduling map presentations for class.
  2. Get all permission slips signed (library for Wed., The MET for the 31st with a dollar, and the Queens Museum for the first week in November)
  3. You should be doing independent reading all the time and logging what you have read... full reading logs even at home, just like we do in class in your reader's sourcebook.

Homework:

Please post to the Blog answers to the following questions and make sure to sign your posts:

  • Why do we celebrate Columbus Day?
  • When did it become a holiday?
  • Should it be a holiday?

If you find good websites... post them with your comments.

Have a great long weekend.

Ms. S

We celebrate Columbus Day because he was the discoverer of our country. Ww first started celebrating when ....I think after Columbus died. I don't think we should be celebrating him because he wasn't the first step foot on America from another country. I also think he should because he was the first to have it racorded.

We celebrate Columbus Day because Christopher he was supposedly the first one who stepped on the American land.
We started celebrating the holiday when.....I think....when we first figured out that Columbus did that.
I think we shouldnt celebrate him because he was not the first to step into America.

We celebrate Colombus Day because he was the founder of America. We started celebrating Colombus after he discovered America. I don't think we should celebrate him because nobody actually celebrates him. For example, people don't decorate their houses for Colombus Day. I think that everyone, (including myself) take advantage of the day off.

Colombus Day HW

We celebrate Colombus Day evry October 12 to honor Christopher Colombus' first voyage into the Americas in 1492. The first known celebration of Colombus Day was in 1792, organized by the Colombian Order. It became an official holiday when President Franklin Roosevelt said that every October 12 would now be Colombus Day. Personally, I think that Colombus Day should be celebrated becauseit was an important day in America's history.

Stacey,

You don't have to put it into your writer's sourcebook, but it's never a bad idea to keep track of everything.
So it's up to you...

In my opinion, I think that Columbus day should be a holiday because he is the one that discovered our land and it was a big part of our culture and history.

We celebrate Columbus Day because in 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered America. He found a continent many other nations did not realize existed. Columbus Day became a holiday on October 12,1866 in New York City. I think Columbus Day should be a holiday but not just about him, it should be for all the people that helped discover America.

H.W: Columbus day:

We celebrate Columbus day because Christopher Columbus was the founder of the America. It became a holiday on Oct,12,1792 and in Oct,12,1869, the Italians from San Francisco started to call this day a Columbus day. I think we should
celebrate this day because without him, we MIGHT not be where we are right now.

-Why do we celebrate Columbus Day?
We celebrate Columbus Day because he was the founder of our country on October 12th, 1492.

-When did it become a holiday?
It became a holiday when President Benjamin Harrison made a proclamation. Then in 1905, Colombus Day was celebrated in Colorado.

-Should it be a holiday?
I don't think that we should celebrate him because no one actually celebrates his discovery but people only remember this day.

We celebrate Columbus day because Columbus set a whole centuries worth of history since he discovered the Americas. The first Columbus day was celebrated in New York 1792. I think its should be a holiday because if Columbus hadn't tried to reach Asia by going west instead of east i wouldn't be living here.

We celebrate Columbus day because everyone believes that he is the first one to discover our country. He also brought lots of people here from england and bought land from the Indians. (which became property of the British government). I think that we started celebrating Columbus day long after Columbus died. I think we started celebrating it when we acknoledged that he did what he did. In my opinion, I don't think that we should be celebrating Columbus because first of all, Others were in America before him. The reason we don't hear much about them is because Columbus was the only one to decide to cheat the Indians out of their land and lives. The Indian's worked hard to develope the lives they had and those who traveled to America before Columbus I think respected that. But Columbus decided to take advantage of the Indians because they didn't know that they were basically stolen from -Tessa
