Weekend homework

Find a feature article in the newspaper and discuss the effectiveness of the lead and the headline on the blog...

remember, use the words of the writer in quotes and talk about how the lead works... do you want to read the rest of the article? What do you know based on the lead?

Please finish the lead assignment from class as well in your writer's sourcebooks... we will discuss this on Tuesday.

* Side note, I have a meeting on Monday and won't be in school so no extra help.

I see that everyone chose to write about the article where a superbug killed a boy because it gave the boy staff infection. However, I chose a different article to write about. The article I read in the newspaper "Newsday" was titled "Wildfire Pollution Poses Health Threat" The lead of the article explained alot. It was basically what the article was about which is good. In the article, it said that in Los Angeles, a wildfire accured which made it harder for many people to breathe. People with bad breathing conditions were urged to stay inside with the doors and windows closed an the AC on. I also found some direct quotes in my article which was..

Joe Flynn, 48 "Sure I'm worried about breathing that stuff up there," he said. "It's not cool but everyone is dying to get back home."

Another direct quote was..

"In the immediate aftermath of a fire, we're all at risk of the fine particulate matter we can inhale," said Julia Robinson Shimizu, a spokeswoman for Breathe L.A. "In general it's good to limit outdoor strenuous activity at least seven days after the fires have ended."

and..

"Sometimes its better to sit quietly at home and watch it on TV," he said.

Those were some of the indirect quotes in my article.

The feature article that I chose to do this homework on is called "Get aboard the Jazz Trail ride." The headline is effective in this artcle because it tells you what most of the story is going to be about without having to read a wsingle sentence of the lead. The title is also effective because it is interesting, so more people will probably read this story instead of a story with a boring title like "Cat rescued from Tree." Even though the title explained a little bit on what the story is going to be about, the lead in this story helps more thoughroly explain what the story will be about. Another way that the lead in the story that I chose works is buy starting off with something that would interest people who live in Queens: "Some of the greatest musicians to play jazz music called Queens their home." Even after only reading the first sentence of the lead of my story, I already want to read the rest of the story. The lead really does have abig impact on the feature article and who is going to read the article. The things that you know from reading my feature articles draft is that awesome jazz players come from Queens and that in a place called Jazz Trails,(Flushing Town Hall Nove, ber 3) you can learn some things about the famous jazz players of Queens. The feature article that I chose sounds pretty interesting, right?

I read the same thing in the newspaper about the superbug who kills a boy. The lead was very strong because it caught my attention once I read the title and first sentence.

In the paper today, i read about global warming. i think the lead was really good becuase the lead told me a lot about the global warming and what the article's going to be about. i think the headline was really important because the headline told me what the article is.The headline was "Warming Revives Flora and Fauna in Greenland" and i think that means the warming is effecting Flora and Fauna in Greenland. So it told me what the article is and it helped me if it was a interestig topic or not.

I herd about the Giants and the dolphins playing in london and was very intrested. It was said that the game was the first season game ever played in london I was facinated. I was intrested when I looked at the article of the Giants and the Dolphins. As soon as I read the head line to this article I was tuned in. Then as I read the lead I became more and more facinated. The lead talked about before the game which amazed me how much went on between the fireworks and the fire and people. London had never witnessed such entertainment. The main sports in london are rugby and soccer.

LONDON, Oct. 28 — As if to announce the N.F.L.’s arrival, an on-field pregame show included a pop band, the white-booted and short-shorted Dolphins cheerleaders, four dozen people twirling gigantic Dolphins and Giants jerseys, and a small blimp. Players ran onto the field accompanied by fireworks and bursts of flames.

Schedule/Results Statistics | Roster Depth Chart | History VideoMore Video » The N.F.L. does not do subtle, and was not about to start now.

Renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Save the Queen” were sung. Finally, after 30 minutes of warm-up acts, months of planning and years of wondering how far the N.F.L. could stretch its horizon, the ball was booted downfield to start the game. Flash bulbs lit the inside of Wembley Stadium like glitter.

And like that, the N.F.L. had reached a new frontier, playing a regular-season game outside of North America for the first time.

The Giants, now 6-2, won their sixth game in a row by beating the winless Dolphins, 13-10. Miami, which scored its only touchdown with less than 2 minutes left in the game to add a welcome dose of suspense, fell to 0-8 under the first-year coach Cam Cameron.

But for the N.F.L. the game will long be remembered for the moment it represented, not the final score.

It was not the high-scoring, big-play affair that league executives and fans might have preferred, but it was well-received by the 81,176 people in attendance, who cheered every deep pass whether it was completed or not, and who raised their voices in anticipation any time a runner found open turf.

Fumbles — and there were many — were a crowd favorite. In the second quarter, the rise-and-sit “wave” circled the stands.

Wembley Stadium has broad awnings covering most of the seats, which kept fans dry but left an open rectangle to the dark sky above the field. For most of the game, a spritzing drizzle fell through the hole, and with some swirling breezes, it sometimes felt like playing in a sneeze.

The slippery grass was quickly churned by the long cleats of players. It muddied the uniforms to give the game an old-school look, but also muddied each team’s hopes to do more than pound the ball with the running game.

Giants running back Brandon Jacobs gained 131 yards on 23 carries. Quarterback Eli Manning completed 8 of 22 passes for 59 yards.

Through three quarters, Manning had 28 yards passing and, thanks to a pair of long scrambles, 28 yards rushing.

The loyalties of fans were divided into far more than two sides. Many wore N.F.L. jerseys, the preferred fashion in American football stadiums, but more than half wore those of teams other than the Dolphins or Giants. Officially, the Dolphins were the home team, but there was no voracious cheering and moaning. Fans, somewhat immune to the sloppy play, simply seemed pleased to be watching a regular-season game in person.

The Giants opened the scoring with a 20-yard field goal by Tynes, but most of the first half was spent taking turns slogging through the middle of the field.

The Giants held the 3-0 lead until the final minute of the first half. A short and low third-and-3 pass from Manning to Plaxico Burress was ruled incomplete, but an replay review changed the call, giving the Giants a first down at Miami’s 10-yard line.

Many fans did not know what to make of the turnaround. Referee Gerald Austin’s explanation could not be heard through the blare of a Bon Jovi song through the public-address system.

On the next play, Manning retreated to pass, found no one, and ran to his left. He beat Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor to the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. The Giants held a 10-0 lead with 59 seconds left in the second quarter.

Miami quarterback Cleo Lemon cocked his arm to throw three plays later, only to have the ball slip from his grip. Giants defensive end Michael Strahan fell on the fumble at the 40-yard line, and the offense moved into position for Tynes to kick a 41-yard field goal with 2 seconds left.

The game went to halftime, when a male streaker — not part of the N.F.L.’s plan, but a traditional British touch — kept the crowd humming by dancing at midfield before eventually being firmly ushered away.

The Dolphins kept the game within reach through the second half, but could not muster a true comeback. In the third quarter, defensive end Matt Roth’s blind-side sack of Manning forced a fumble that Taylor recovered at midfield.

The Dolphins moved to the 2-yard line, but Kawika Mitchell’s second-down sack of Lemon kept the Dolphins at bay. Former Giants kicker Jay Feely booted a 29-yard field goal to tighten the score to 13-3.

Tynes soon pulled his own 29-yard attempt to the left, sustaining Miami’s hope. After Lemon completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Ted Ginn Jr., with 1:54 remaining, the Dolphins tried an onside kick. It went out of bounds. The Giants took possession, and the Dolphins, without timeouts, were helpless to stop the clock.

Time ran out a game destined to be remembered for something other than sloppy play. The league staged a regular-season game in Mexico City in 2005, but this game was viewed as a sort of logistical experiment — five time zones and an ocean from the American East Coast.

If the game is looked upon as a success by owners — meaning, mainly, that it was not only well-received but did not overtly disrupt the abilities of the teams to prepare — than two international games will most likely be played outside of the United States in each of the next few years.

N.F.L. officials have floated vague but aggressive plans to stage 16 international games a year (to include every team annually) and to play the Super Bowl in foreign cities.

But this was the first big leap toward that uncertain future. All the planning came to an end as darkness fell on London, as if one phase of the process actually ended with the bang of pregame fireworks.

Even the N.F.L. is not sure where it is going from here.

EXTRA POINTS

Former Giants kicker Jay Feely, now with the Dolphins, missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt on the game’s opening drive. It broke a string of 24-consecutive successes. ...Barry Cofield’s personal foul in the third quarter drew the ire of Coughlin, who shouted at and followed the defensive tackle to the bench.

In the newspaper, I read that a deadly virus called the staff infection, killed a 12 year old boy. I thought that the lead explained alot about what the story was going to be about. The story also explained how to prevent yourself from getting the disease.

RAIN SHOWER EASE WILDFIRE CONDITIONS

This lead is strong because in New York you don't really hear about weather from California.Fire Fighters didn't have to work as hard with rain showers.More people could have probably survived because the fire was put out faster with the rain.I would keep on reading to find out if more people survived because of natural rain showers.Based on the lead I know that rain showers helped to ease the fire.
What started the wild fire was the Santa Ana winds. The number of deaths actually rose to seven. It killed illegal immigrants. There were dozens of blazes, but nine blazes ranged from 97% to 25%.
In this feature there are direct and indirect quotes. One indirect quote is Forecasters say there would be some weak flows of wind out of the north and northwest on Sunday and then return to calm and drizzles.
A direct quote was "It's very overcast right now,no wind.Low humidity, about 30%.They're talking about rain." said Audrey Hagen.

THE MOVING UNDERGROUND CITY

Everyone else was so interested in the staff infection but I didn't want to write about that because there is too much about the MSRA (or the other way around MRSA).
I read an article about the first electric powered subway line that was finished in 1904. I think the lead was good because it included why Alfred Ely Beach wanted to build it. I read the rest of the article because it looked really interesting and it is 100 years old right now.

Tragedies in east and west coast

"In his Mothers Words, 12year-old Carlos Don of sandiego was "the picture of health" when he set off for a school trip in mid-january".
This story is about how staff infection killed two young boys this year. I am pretty sure this was a feature article because it used the mothers words in every paragraph and i dont think it had alot of facts.

Today I read an article about how some people think thats kids shouldn't have toy guns or waterpistols, and things like that, on holloween or at school. The lead really made me iterested. I wondered what the headline had to do with anything. That made me curious, which made me want to read more.

"Opec Unites Behind Higher Prices"
Financial Times, November 18, 2007
By Ed Crooks and Javier Blas in Riyadh

The lead was very specific in explaining the Opec metting in Saudi Arabia. I wanted to read the whole article. The article was very thorough about outlining the differences and agreements between Opec nations. The Opec nations say if the US attacks Iran then they will make the prices higher ($150 or $200 a barrel) but if we don't then the prices will stay the same.
