I want to help you all understand the "work" of field work. Let's use this assignment as a guide.
Many of you think of research as "going to the library and looking at books/or on the internet for information about your topic". In doing this you are usually looking at secondary sources. This is a good beginning, a good jumping off place, but in field work you need to find primary sources and then to explain and interpret what you find.
So, if the angle (the pov you have chosen) for your teen life feature article is fashion, you may:
Create a survey about teen fashion and survey 20 teens. Maybe you want your survey questions to be broad (questions about fashion likes/dislikes/trends/styles/purpose) or specific (what are your thoughts on wearing school uniforms?).
Go to a shopping area/mall and observe teens for an hour or two. Take notes on what you see. Are there observable trends?
Find historical primary sources (this could even be a newspaper from 10 years ago). What were the teens of the day wearing?
Interview your parents or grandparents. What did they wear as teenagers?
Go to a clothing store and interview the owner, the buyer, how do they choose what they will sell to teens.
These are just some examples. Try and think of field work activity for your particular story, and please see either myself, Ms. Sackstein, or Ms. Song if you need help.
I look forward to seeing your work, you have some interesting angles you are working on already.
can you attach the lesson 4.1 packet to my e-mail because I tried to open it up. It won't. Hmm... strange?
